The site was created as a counterpart to the Japanese imageboard Futaba Channelalso known as 2chan, [6] and the first boards were created for posting images and discussion related to anime. The Guardian once summarized the 4chan community as "lunatic, juvenile The majority of posting on 4chan takes place on imageboardswhere users have the ability to share images and create threaded discussions.

Each board has its own set of rules and is dedicated to a specific topic, variously including anime and manga, video games, music, literature, fitness, politics, and sports, among others.

Poole has acknowledged that donations alone could not keep the site online, and turned to advertising to help make ends meet. Unlike most web forums, 4chan does not have a registration system, allowing users to post anonymously.

A "capcode" may be used to attribute the post to "Anonymous Mod", although moderators often post without the capcode. Revealing oneself as a janitor is grounds for immediate dismissal. In a series of posts on the topic, Nishimura explained that the split was due to 4chan being blacklisted by most advertising companies, and that the new 4channel domain would allow for the site to receive advertisements by mainstream ad providers.

Each post is assigned a post number. Certain post numbers are sought after with a large amount of posting taking place to "GET" them. A lolcat is an image combining a photograph of a cat with text intended to contribute humour.

On January 21st,Poole published an update on the 4chan news blog [20] announcing his retirement as site administrator after eleven-and-a-half years, assuring that 4chan would continue in his absence. That foundation will now be put to the ultimate test, as today I'm retiring as 4chan's administrator. From a user's perspective, nothing should change. A few senior volunteers--including 4chan's lead developer, managing moderator, and server administrator--have stepped up to ensure a smooth transition over the coming weeks.

I'll need time away to decompress and reflect, but I look forward to one day returning to 4chan as its Admin Emeritus or just another Anonymous, and also writing more about my experience running 4chan on my personal blog. The post was appended by a list of site statistics which was later tweeted [11] on the official 4chan feed seen below. On September 21st,Poole published a post to the 4chan news page [15] announcing that Hiroyuki Nishimurathe founder of the Japanese text board community 2channel, had recently acquired the website for an undisclosed sum.

That day, The New York Times Bits [16] blog published an article about the acquisition, which included a statement from Nishimura:. That day, Martin Shkreli posted a tweet announcing his interest in "joining the Board of Directors of 4chan" shown below, left.

Shortly after, Nishimura tweeted that he had responded to Shkreli's direct message shown below, right. On October 3rd, Markus "Notch" Persson posted tweets suggesting he had an interest in purchasing 4chan as long as he did not have to do "any actual work" shown below. He has since deleted all tweets discussing a potential purchase of the site. On October 4th, Gizmodo [24] published an article about 4chan's financial troubles, which included a statement from Nishimura about a potential sale to Shkreli:.

Users generally submit image posts anonymously and as a result, the default username "Anonymous" has become closely associated with 4chan-related activism and subcultures. In Marchall word filters were deactivated by the administrators but a few have been brought back for periods of times since then. Each post on an imageboard is assigned a numeric sequence.

Because of the high traffic volume and post rate of the site, certain post numbers became known as GET and were sought after by users as part of a forum game they played. The remaining boards will all be shifted over to 4channel. I hope they require an email and account to join, subject the nsfw site to a redesign, and start pushing an app.

I can only imagine how tasty the drama would be if they madeover 4chan into reddit. Like all websites they had a chance, and they blew it a decade ago.

But a tiger in a bag is still a tiger and good luck painting that bagged tiger to look like a friendly pussycat. As a frequent user of 4chan for the past decade or so, there's many shades of grey in what's allowed and what's actually normal that dramatically change how usable the website is.

The site has always been home to a lot of people with awful views and been a place where they wouldn't get banned just for that, but it's been in a place for a few years now where those views are dominant in a way that the site's culture never approached before.

What I'm trying to say is that 4chan will always be bad in some way, but it doesn't have to be as bad as it is right now. There's a large userbase that just wants the benefits of imageboards without having Nazis dominate everything and appealing to how the site used to be has a strong pull.

There's a whole lot of ways you can have 4chan still be 4chan without leaving it in the state it is right now. I think that a lot of teenagers started to flood the site around this time too.

There was visible reduction in the quality of threads and replies. Every board was full of 'boomer' and more recently 'NPC' memes, it was awful. I don't know if this split will help at all for the regular user, because the damage is already done. The main demographic of 4chan is edgy teenagers now. As such, it started getting filled with others who looked up to the edginess and wanted to be as edgy as possible to fit in, so it only became more edgy. The concept of an almost anything goes discussion board might sound good on paper, but I think it's impossible to got the anarchy route without becoming a vile mess of edginess.

I really don't think that's the case. The "anything goes" mentality which has also increased as of late, the hate was able to get a grip on other boards partially because actually staying on the topic of the board you're on is much less enforced than it used to be certainly allowed 4chan to get much worse, but I don't think it was a slow decline as more and more edgy kids joined the place that they saw as the place to be like that. You could be edgy, but the site as a whole wouldn't necessarily go along with you and if you didn't have anything to say along with it, you'd probably be made fun of.

That's the thing. The US election comes, and the site already has a right wing bias, so more and more right wingers will choose to go to 4chan to fit in. There was probably a time when the alt-rightness was the vocal minority, but as more right wingers joined them became the vocal majority. It's gotten a lot worse but only because it was a mess in the first place, enabling it to. I don't think this will work well at all.

Trying to 'clean up' or 'fix' 4chan is a contradiction. This is just asking the users to grief the fuck out of 4channel.

You can't just snap your fingers and rewrite ten years of community cultural norms because you want to 'make money. Part of me is a bit miffed they'd even try.

I'd miss it if it went away. You're probably right. Thanks for the explanation! I've rather lost confidence in filters. A human can always outsmart a filter with about five second's thought, so they don't really hit their targets that well.

A secure tripcode can be generated by placing two hash marks in the [Name] field, as opposed to one as with a normal tripcode ex.

Secure tripcodes use a secret key file on the server to help obscure their password. The previous example would display " User!! A capcode is a way of verifying someone as a 4chan team member. Normal users do not have the ability to post using a capcode.

A moderator capcode will display " Mod " after their name. Similarly, the administrator capcode displays " Admin ".
